click The restaurant was relatively busy for a Sunday evening, however we were served pretty promptly. I had the Haloumi served on a salad of olives, spelt, rocket and caramelised carrot, which was a nice change from the usual bruschetta starter normally available at most generic Italian restaurants. The vegetarian platter was well present with a trio of tasters in separate 'terracotta' dishes.
The root vegetable slaw with an olive oil, mint and lemon dressing was vibrant and refreshing. The butternut squash lasagne had a tasty topping of melted mozzarella and tangy tomato sauce, however the pasta layers lying underneath were a congealed mush, which I couldn't stomach. Lastly, the mushroom croquettes had a crunchy breadcrumb coating, but texture inside was unappealing and the rich mushroom taste was entirely absent.
The accompanying Napoli dip was rich and I would love the recipe.
I am not a fussy vegetarian at all but I do feel that their vegetarian meals are an afterthought. With this in mind, I will certainly not be hurrying back. Own or manage this property? Although it is right in the middle of Glasgow, warm, curved wooden furniture and spiralling metalwork, designed by Scottish craftsman Paul Hodgkiss, give Cafe Antipasti a comfortable almost rustic look. More representative is the extensive selection of pasta and pizza dishes.
Think along the lines of their two meat lasagne or the stone baked fancy mushroom pizza. While Cafe Antipasti does run a selection of little plates, which are ideal for a light lunch or snack, many of the main courses aim to be heartily satisfying. The paprika roasted half chicken with fries or the garlic and herb chump of lamb served with grilled Mediterranean vegetables take some beating but leave room for the staff to talk you into a dessert.
